David DeGroot - January 24, 2010 & May 2, 2010
These are all day workshops held in Philomath. The cost is $95.00. Space is limited, please call 541-929-9520 to sign up.
David De Groot has been studying and practicing bonsai since 1972. His first experience was as a hobbyist, because in America there are very few opportunities to become a bonsai professional. Like most Americans, he studied informally, taking classes with American artists John Yoshio Naka and Yuji Yoshimura when they would visit his city from time to time. Despite few opportunities, David worked hard, began writing articles for American bonsai magazines, and began to teach other hobbyists. After 15 years, he quit his career as a symphony orchestra musician and began working for bonsai customers.
In 1989, he was chosen to be curator of Weyerhaeuser Company’s new Pacific Rim Bonsai Collection. Today, his written articles have been published in eight countries, he has lectured throughout the United States and in Brazil, Canada, England and Venezuela, and his book Basic Bonsai Design is in its fourth printing.
David knows he still has much to learn, so he currently takes classes in satsuki cultivation from Mr. Tatemori Gondo of the Eishin Shiyoji Company, Ltd., and travels to Japan once or twice yearly to study with Sensei Yasuo Mitsuya of Tokai-en in Toyohashi.

Michael Hagedorn - April 18, 2010
On April 18, 2010 Michael will be at our retail store at Garland Nursery. He will be doing free demos in the morning starting at 9am and will conduct a
workshop in the afternoon. Space in the workshop is limited and will cost $50.00 per person so please call 541-929-9520 to sign up.
Michael Hagedorn’s art background ranges from painting and drawing to ceramic sculpture and installation. He made bonsai containers for nine years in upstate New York and Arizona. But before all that, he was already into bonsai; a Sunset book triggered a passion for bonsai when only sixteen. During his years as a potter, Michael studied bonsai with Boon Manakitivipart of California.
In December 2003, surrendering to a rare opportunity, he traveled to Nagano Prefecture, Japan where he apprenticed for several years under bonsai master Shinji Suzuki. Seven trees that he wired were accepted into the Kokufu Show in Tokyo, two in the Taikan Ten, and one in the Sakafu. Michael was also honored by Mr. Suzuki to do the wiring on two trees that went on to win a Kokufu Prize and a Prime
Minister Award.
The lunacy and revelations of apprentice life are detailed in his forthcoming book: Post-dated: The Schooling of an Irreverent Bonsai Monk. Visit Michael's website at www.crataegus.com.
