Overview

Tsukumo Dwarf Cypress (Chamaecyparis pisfera ‘Tsukumo’)

Zones: Sunset A3, 2b-6, 15-17, 32, 34, 39. USDA 4 – 8.

Description: Finely textured, very dwarf, evergreen cypress. This one is very slow grower. You may get 1/4 to 1/2 inch growth per year. Great plant for distant forest scenes, rock plantings, or keep putting it into larger pots as needed to develop a great trunk and nebari.

Basic Care: Grows best in partial sun, especially morning sun and afternoon shade or filtered light all day. Never allow root ball to dry out completely, keep evenly moist. Protect tree from direct extreme hot summer sun and do not allow roots to freeze in the winter.

Feeding: Fertilize just before and during growing season until autumn. Many brands of fertilizers are available and it is beneficial to use a variety of these. Follow all package instructions.

Repotting: Young plants can be root pruned every other year, older specimens approximately every three to five years. Repot after you’ve finished repotting your deciduous trees in the spring or in the fall. Correct root pruning is very important and cannot be addressed in a line or two. Please refer to your favorite bonsai book or local bonsai experts.
